A 20 year old from Sanjak village in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh woke up in hospital to a horrific discovery: his genitals were gone and he had undergone sex reassignment surgery without his consent. His so called friend told him he was now a woman and they had to get married.
The young man whose ordeal began with a routine hospital visit was duped by his friend Omprakash Pal. Pal conspired with doctors at Begrajpur Medical College to get the surgery done without the victim’s consent. After the surgery Pal threatened the victim saying no one from his family or community would accept him and they had to live together. He even threatened to kill the victim’s father and grab his share of the family land if he resisted.

Omprakash Pal was arrested after BKU led by Shyam Pal staged protests. According to police Omprakash had taken the victim to the hospital on June 3 saying it was an emergency. Hospital staff gave him anesthesia and got the surgery done.
The victim told police that Omprakash had been threatening and harassing him for 2 years. From his hospital bed the young man said, “I had no idea what was going to happen. I came with trust.” He said, “When I woke up the next day he told me I was now a woman and we had to get married.”

When asked by police about his motives Omprakash said they would live together as a married couple. He said a lawyer had agreed to get their court marriage done and they would soon shift to Lucknow where Omprakash’s uncle resides. Omprakash had also withdrawn 35,000 from the victim’s bank account.
In response to the case farmer leader Shyam Pal staged a protest outside the medical college demanding action against the involved parties. Khatauli circle officer Ramashish Yadav assured the public of a fair investigation. “A sex change operation was done on a young man under false pretences. The accused will be investigated and action will be taken as per the report,” Yadav said.
