The trial, which took place in Eaton County, Michigan, concluded with a swift decision by the jury after just two hours of deliberation, as reported by CBS News and the Lansing State Journal. The Gruesome Murder and Extradition from Italy

The tragic saga began in 2002 when Caraballo, 37, was suffocated and bludgeoned to death in the basement of their home in Charlotte, Michigan. His burned remains were later discovered near a blueberry field in Ottawa County, Michigan, but it wasn’t until 2015 that they were positively identified as Caraballo’s. McCallum’s involvement in the murder remained undisclosed until her arrest in Italy in 2020. After more than two years of legal proceedings, she was extradited to Michigan to face trial.

During the trial, prosecutors argued that McCallum orchestrated the murder to rid herself of Caraballo, whom she deemed as a hindrance to her lifestyle. They presented evidence suggesting her active participation in planning and executing the crime. Christopher McMillan, a key witness who had previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, implicated McCallum and her daughter, Dineane Ducharme, in the murder plot. Ducharme, who was convicted of first-degree murder in 2021, and McMillan corroborated the prosecution’s claims, providing insight into the chilling details of the crime.

However, McCallum maintained her innocence throughout the trial, asserting that she played no role in her husband’s murder. She took the stand in her defense, denying any involvement in the brutal act. Nonetheless, her testimony was challenged by the prosecution and contradicted by her own daughter, Sicily Caraballo, who testified against her mother, revealing disturbing details about the events leading to her father’s demise.

Lloyd mentioned that all three defendants faced initial charges of first-degree murder. However, McCallum’s extradition to Michigan was executed based on a second-degree murder warrant. This decision stemmed from European authorities’ refusal to extradite her on a first-degree murder warrant.
