Walter Medina, 48, was apprehended by authorities and charged with various offenses, including attempted murder and armed kidnapping, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

The ordeal came to light when police responded to a report at a gas station in Seffner about an injured woman seeking help after fleeing from a van.

The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, had been panhandling in Tampa since January and encountered Medina during that time. As per People, Medina initially provided her with food and drugs, but the situation turned violent, leading to “months of relentless physical abuse and captivity.”

The victim suffered severe injuries, including broken ribs and puncture wounds, allegedly inflicted by Medina using tools such as a baseball bat and a screwdriver.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office stated that Medina had forcibly transported the woman around the area and threatened her against seeking help or escaping. However, she managed to break free when Medina left her unattended near the Walgreens pharmacy.

Upon her escape, the victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries, which included severe injuries to her face and body. Despite Medina’s attempt to flee the scene, he was later arrested after a pursuit by authorities that ended in a crash, as reported by WFLA.

High-Speed Pursuit and Arrest

The dramatic pursuit unfolded across multiple counties, with Medina attempting to elude law enforcement officers by driving recklessly and at high speeds.

Footage from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) dashcam captured the moment Medina’s vehicle became disabled during the chase, as detailed by WFLA. Despite multiple attempts by troopers to stop the vehicle using PIT maneuvers, Medina continued to evade capture, driving through traffic and colliding with other vehicles.

The pursuit eventually came to an end when Medina’s vehicle collided with a concrete barrier, disabling it. Despite his resistance to comply with officers’ orders, Medina was apprehended with the assistance of an FHP K-9 unit.

Sheriff Chad Chronister commended the victim for her brave escape, stating, “This suspect’s reign of violent terror is now over,” according to People.
