A private ambulance ferrying a five-month-old baby, who was very critically ill and on oxygen support, to the Vani Vilas Hospital in Bengaluru was attacked by a mob late on Sunday night near Nelamangala toll plaza. The mob, allegedly in drunk state, had been following the ambulance for a few kilometers before it reached the toll plaza, reports India Today.
The medical emergency presented by the severely ill baby was totally ignored by the miscreants. They went on to brutally beat up the ambulance driver, named John, in the presence of the police personnel who had reached the spot. The video of the incident, which has gone viral on the social media, shows the manner in which the goons attacked the vehicle and how they ignored the pleas of the baby’s parents.
The video shows the manner in which the goons beat up John despite his pleas to leave him. John told the media later that the miscreants were allegedly in an inebriated state while assaulting him. Thanks to the prompt action by the police, the mob was brought under control later and the ambulance was allowed to leave the spot for the hospital, safe in every way, with the baby and the parents.
“An ambulance driver was driving his vehicle fast and overtook an Innova car. The people in the Innova opposed him overtaking the vehicle. Near the Nelamangala toll, people in the Innova took over the ambulance and assaulted the driver. We have registered an FIR and are investigating further. We will determine in the inquiry if they were in an inebriated state while driving,” said Bengaluru Rural SP Mallikarjun Baldandi, reports India Today.
The political parties, especially the opposition BJP in the state, have criticized the government. “The rampage of thugs, shielding of influencers for extortion, unprovoked murders, all these are common in the @INCKarnataka regime. Even if you drive drunk in broad daylight on the roads of the state, the police will not stop you! The hooligans who beat up the driver while blocking the ambulance itself shows how anarchy is rampant,” the Karnataka unit of the BJP posted on ‘X’.
They further added, “Home Minister @DrParameshwara, do you even remember that you are the home minister of the state? So far your role was limited to making statements. Even that seems to have stopped now. #CongressFailsKarnataka.”
The incident points out serious issues pertaining to the road safety and the enforcement of law in Bengaluru and the need for stronger provisions to deal with such acts of violence.
