In Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun, a man named Panna Lal was sentenced to life imprisonment for a horrific crime committed in September 2020. Driven by a desire for a son, Panna Lal, who already had five daughters with his wife Anita, attacked her with a sickle to determine the gender of their unborn child.
Married for 22 years, Panna Lal and Anita had frequent disputes over the gender of their children, as Panna Lal desperately wanted a son. Despite attempts by Anita’s family to intervene, Panna Lal threatened to divorce Anita and remarry to fulfill his wish.

When Anita resisted, he attacked her with a sickle, inflicting a deep cut that left her intestines hanging out. At eight months pregnant, Anita ran out onto the street, where her brother, working nearby, heard her screams and rescued her, while Panna Lal fled the scene.

In court, Panna Lal claimed that Anita had inflicted the wounds on herself to frame him due to a property dispute with her brothers. However, Assistant District Government Counsel (criminal), Munendra Pratap Singh, refuted this, highlighting the severity of the crime and the intent behind it.

Recognizing the gravity of the crime, the court sentenced Panna Lal to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000. Anita welcomed the verdict, expressing relief that justice had been served.
