Kyiv, October 10, 2023 – Ukraine’s air force announced that it had intercepted and neutralized 27 out of 36 Russian attack drones in the southern regions of the country. The successful mission took place in the areas of Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Odesa. These actions come as part of Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to defend its sovereignty against external threats.

The Ukrainian air force revealed their accomplishment through the messaging platform Telegram, stating that the downed drones were identified as “Shahed-136/131.” These Iranian-made drones had been launched from the Crimean peninsula, which Moscow annexed in 2014, further escalating tensions in the region.

Notably, the air force did not disclose the specific targets that the remaining nine drones may have struck, leaving room for speculation about their intended objectives.

Vitaliy Kim, the governor of Mykolaiv, confirmed via Telegram that one of the intercepted drones had been destroyed over his region, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

This escalation in drone activity follows Russia’s increased attacks on ports in southern Ukraine, particularly after withdrawing from a deal that had previously guaranteed safe passage for grain shipments through the Black Sea in July. Additionally, Kyiv has raised concerns about Moscow resuming a campaign of aerial attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. These attacks mirror previous systematic assaults that had left millions without heating and water for extended periods last year.

In a related development, Ukrainian consultancy group Defense Express reported that Moscow had launched over 500 Shahed drones in September alone, marking a monthly record and heightening tensions in the region.
