The United States has accused North Korea of delivering over 1,000 containers of military equipment and munitions to Russia for use in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Washington, D.C., October 13, 2023 – The United States has accused North Korea of facilitating the transfer of more than 1,000 containers filled with military equipment and munitions to Russia. This equipment, according to U.S. national-security spokesman John Kirby, is intended for use in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The White House asserts that North Korea’s motive behind this covert operation is to obtain advanced Russian weapons technology, potentially to enhance its nuclear program. The situation has now raised international concerns about the escalation of the Ukraine crisis and the roles that North Korea and Russia play in it.
The White House presented a graphic illustrating how this transfer took place. According to the timeline provided, between September 7 and October 1, these containers were loaded onto a Russian-flagged ship, which subsequently transported them by rail across Russia to an ammunition depot located approximately 290 miles from Ukraine’s border. John Kirby expressed condemnation for North Korea’s involvement in providing this military equipment to Russia, and he emphasized that the U.S. will closely monitor any further arms shipments from North Korea to Russia.
This isn’t the first time the U.S. has accused North Korea of violating UN Security Council resolutions by providing ammunition, artillery shells, and rockets to Russia. In this latest accusation, North Korea is believed to be seeking a range of military assistance from Russia, including fighter aircraft, surface-to-air missiles, armored vehicles, ballistic missile production equipment, and other advanced technologies.
