Ukrainian Forces Make Strides in Battle for Bakhmut Region.
Andriivka, Ukraine – September 15, 2023: In a significant stride forward, Ukraine proudly proclaims the liberation of Andriivka, a village strategically positioned near the Russian-held city of Bakhmut. This noteworthy achievement was officially disclosed by Ukraine’s General Staff in a statement released via social media channels.
On the morning of Friday, September 15, the General Staff communicated, “Our valiant defense forces have successfully liberated Andriivka, located in the Donetsk region. In the process, they have inflicted substantial losses on the enemy, both in terms of manpower and equipment. Our troops have now consolidated their positions along the previously occupied frontiers.”
Further optimism emanates from the General Staff’s report of “partial success” in operations near Klishchiivka, another village to the south of Bakhmut. However, they caution that “fierce battles are ongoing in this region.”
The strategic significance of Bakhmut cannot be understated. Once home to approximately 70,000 residents, this town fell under Russian control in May following one of the longest and deadliest battles during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Despite this setback, Ukrainian forces displayed unwavering resolve and immediately initiated counteroffensive maneuvers, successfully pushing back enemy forces along both the northern and southern flanks of the city. Incremental gains have been made, as reported by the reputable news agency AFP.
Andriivka, a village situated approximately 14 kilometers (approximately 9 miles) south of Bakhmut, held a pre-war population of fewer than 100 inhabitants.
This declaration of liberation marks the second instance within a 24-hour period in which Kyiv has asserted the freedom of Andriivka. A “communication breakdown” on the preceding Thursday resulted in a “premature” announcement by Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar via Telegram. Swiftly, this announcement was contradicted by Ukraine’s 3rd Assault Brigade, which emphatically stated that it was too early to declare the liberation of Andriivka.
In a sternly-worded statement, the brigade asserted, “The assertion of Andriivka’s capture is erroneous and untimely. Presently, intense and severe combat engagements persist in the districts encompassing Klishchiivka and Andriivka. Such declarations are detrimental, endanger the lives of our personnel, and impede the execution of combat missions.”
Subsequently, in another Telegram post, Deputy Defense Minister Maliar provided clarification, acknowledging a “communication breakdown among multiple sources of information reporting directly from the battlefield.”
On Friday, Maliar issued an update on Telegram, confirming that the General Staff had now “officially ratified the liberation of Andriivka, achieved through sustained combat efforts on the preceding day.” She further commented, “The operation was arduous, marked by rapidly changing dynamics throughout the day.”
